FIRE RETARDANT TANKS FOR EVERGREEN SUPERTANKER SERVICES
Sel-Tech was contracted by Evergreen International Airlines to build Fire Retardant Pressure Vessel Tanks for their 747 Supertanker. The Supertanker is the largest fire fighting aircraft in the world, and the tanks were built to suit that!
Fabricated from aircraft grade Aluminum, the tanks required extensive use of fixtures, precision sheet metal skills, and many man hours to complete. Working closely with the engineers on the project, Sel-Tech was able to effectively build a quality airworthy product in a relatively short amount of time. All parts of the project are documented and certified by an FAA approved DAR.
With the use of precision CNC milling, power slip roll, pyramid roll, power shear, hydraulic press brake, and various aviation sheet metal tools, staff at Sel-Tech was able to complete a very large and complex job. When fabrication was complete, contract requirements stated a pressure test of the vessels must be completed.
Using hydrostatic test pumps, water trucks, pressure gages, pressure relief valves, and various other testing equipment, Sel-Tech performed a 120 psi test of the vessel. Testing requirements state “no leaks”. All 6 tanks fabricated by Sel-Tech passed the pressure tests.
On a 20 foot long riveted pressure vessel, not having any leaks is a testament to the precision sheet metal fabrication you can expect from Sel-Tech. We fabricated 6 custom tanks ranging in size from 900 to 2500 gallons, to fit inside the 747 aircraft and provide a total of 20,000 gallons of storage. Look for the Evergreen Supertanker dropping 20,000 gallons of fire retardant on fires starting October 2008.
